Shockwave Therapy

Revitalize Your Health with Shockwave Therapy

  • What Is Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Therapy is an effective, non-invasive therapy used for the healing of soft tissue injuries. It uses an acoustic wave to carry high energy to the chronic painful area. The high energy, in turn, promotes regeneration and repair processes, resulting in accelerated healing, decreased pain, and increased mobility.

What are the specific effects of shockwave on the tissues?

    • Formation of new blood vessels
    • Reversal of the chronic inflammation process
    • Stimulation of collagen production required for tissue repair
    • Break down of calcium deposits and calcification
    • Dispersion of painful chemicals out of the painful area
  • What it Entails

Shockwave therapy is useful for treating common conditions, such as:

    • Achilles tendinitis
    • Plantar fasciitis
    • Shin splints
    • Jumper’s knee (patellar tendinitis)
    • Hamstring strains
    • Hip bursitis
    • Gluteal tendinitis
    • Inflammation and calcification of shoulder tendons (i.e. rotator cuff and biceps tendon)
    • Golfer’s and tennis elbow (medial and lateral epicondylitis)

Treatment is not an extra cost and typically is performed once per week for 3-6 weeks.

  • The Approach

At Sporting Edge Physiotherapy, we implement Shockwave therapy to promote positive effects in the healing process. We only use shockwave therapy if there are no signs of any infection, bone tumours, metabolic conditions, or circulation/nerve disorders. We take a thorough assessment before starting the therapy.

There is mild discomfort during a shockwave session lasting 4 to 5 minutes. The intensity can be adjusted to keep the discomfort within your tolerance limit. After a treatment you may experience temporary tenderness or soreness at the treated area. This is due to the inflammation response brought on by the shockwave therapy and the initiation of your natural healing process.

How Shockwave Therapy Works

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses pressure waves to treat various musculoskeletal conditions. The therapy involves the application of a series of high-energy percussions to the affected area. These shockwaves are mechanical, not electric, and they work by inducing microtrauma to the tissue that is significantly injured.

This microtrauma initiates an inflammatory response, which stimulates the body's natural healing processes. The shockwaves lead to increased blood circulation and metabolism in the impacted area, which accelerates the body's healing process by increasing cell generation and dissolving calcium deposits.

Shockwave therapy also directly provides pain relief by overstimulating the nerves that send pain signals to the brain, thereby reducing the sensitivity of these nerves.

The entire process is quick, usually taking about 15 minutes per session, and it's performed without the need for painkillers or anesthesia. It's a safe and effective treatment option for various chronic musculoskeletal conditions.

What to Expect During Your Shockwave Therapy

During your shockwave therapy session, our team will ensure a comfortable and informed experience. The process begins with a consultation, where we discuss your symptoms and examine the affected area. This helps us to tailor the therapy to your specific needs.

Next, a conductive gel is applied to your skin, which aids in the efficient transmission of shockwaves. The therapist then uses a handheld device to deliver targeted shockwaves to the problem area. The sensation is often described as a series of intense pulses against your skin, but it's generally not painful.

The number of sessions you'll need can vary, depending on the nature and severity of your condition. After the treatment, it's normal to experience some temporary soreness or swelling in the treated area.

Our therapists are committed to making the process as comfortable as possible, keeping you informed and at ease throughout your therapy journey.
