Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

Unlock Better Health with Pelvic Physiotherapy

  • What Is Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

Pelvic floor Physiotherapy is a specialization of Physiotherapy that involves both internal and external assessment and treatment of the pelvic floor muscles. The pelvic floor muscles are located between the hip bones and the sacrum – they serve to support the pelvic organs, such as the bladder, the colon, and the uterus.

You may benefit from pelvic floor Physiotherapy if you have any type of pelvic floor dysfunction. This is classified into two categories – either your muscles are too weak or too tight. A tight pelvic floor can be a contributing factor to urinary frequency and urgency. A weak pelvic floor can contribute to stress incontinence.

  • What It Entails

At Sporting Edge Physiotherapy, your therapist will tailor your treatment according to your individual needs. Your Physiotherapist will perform an external examination, assessing the skin, muscles, fascia, abdomen, and lower back.

There is an internal component to the assessment that is not always necessary to perform, but will give your Physiotherapist a full picture of the problem you may be dealing with. An assessment will provide your skilled physiotherapist with valuable information to better enhance and curate your treatment plan, in order to reach the best possible outcome in the shortest amount of time.

  • The Approach

Here at Sporting Edge Physiotherapy, we want you to feel as comfortable as possible during your visit with us. This is what you can expect at your first pelvic health physiotherapy appointment:

    • We may assess posture, breathing, and joints and muscles to ensure that there are not any non-pelvic floor contributors to your symptoms.
    • If an internal exam is required, we will discuss it with you in detail before obtaining your consent to proceed. If you are not comfortable with an internal exam, your therapist can discuss alternatives.
    • We may assess for prolapse during an internal exam.
    • After the assessment, we will go over our findings, educate you about your condition, and provide specific recommendations.

Understanding the Pelvic Floor

The pelvic floor is a complex structure of muscles, ligaments, and tissues that span the base of the pelvis. It plays a crucial role in several bodily functions. The pelvic floor muscles support vital organs like the bladder, uterus or prostate, and rectum, maintaining their optimal position in the pelvis.

These muscles also control the opening and closing of the urinary and anal sphincters, playing a key role in bladder and bowel continence. In women, the pelvic floor muscles are involved in sexual function and childbirth. In men, they contribute to erectile function and ejaculation.

The strength and flexibility of the pelvic floor muscles can significantly impact one's quality of life. Weak or overactive pelvic floor muscles can lead to conditions like incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, or sexual dysfunction. Understanding the function and importance of the pelvic floor is the first step towards maintaining or regaining pelvic health.
